About this role
Youth squad members must be 16 and attend a full six-month EMT training course at either the Paramus or Mahwah Training Academies, with classes starting in February or September, days or nights. After the course, members obtain New Jersey state certification by passing a written examination. Members without a driver's license stay stationed at the ambulance building while on duty. Youth squad members generally fill shorter weekday shifts so the schedule does not interfere with school work, riding after school until 10 pm, and can ride all night on weekends with parental permission. The corps provides free EMT training at the Bergen County Training Center with pre-approval, plus free uniforms and workers compensation.
